My grandfather, Sir <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/portrait\/mw107884\/Sir-Henry-Clayton-Darlington\">Henry Clayton Darlington<\/a><\/strong>, commanded troops at the Hellespont, so for me that war &#8212; and the Armistice which ended it &#8212; is but one degree of separation from personal memory.  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Common British, Canadian, South African, and ANZAC traditions include two minutes of silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (11:00 am, 11 November), as that marks the time (in the United Kingdom) when armistice became effective.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Poppies grew in the fields of Flanders where so many of our soldiers died, and in the UK <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishlegion.org.uk\/support-us\/\">poppies are worn in the lapel on this day<\/a> to remember them.  In the words of the <strong>Laurence Binyon<\/strong>&#8216;s poem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/266\/126.html\">For the Fallen<\/a>, <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the going down of the sun and in the morning<br \/>\nWe will remember them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smallwarsjournal.com\/blog\/veterans-day-and-the-burden-of-vigilance\">Small Wars Journal has a history<\/a> of the various <strong>Armistice Day<\/strong>, <strong>Veterans Day<\/strong> and <strong>Remembrance Day<\/strong> observances.  <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk\/Flanders-poppy-pressed-World-War-soldier-s-Bible\/story-17275291-detail\/story.html\">poppy pressed between the pages of St Luke&#8217;s gospel<\/a> (image, above) was picked by one <strong>Les Forryan<\/strong>, who served with the UK&#8217;s Army Service Corps in France and Belgium during the Great War, and the book itself was a &#8220;Soldier&#8217;s Pocket Testament&#8221;, given to him in 1915.
