{"id":1975,"date":"2006-10-19T02:48:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-19T02:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2006-10-19T02:48:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-19T02:48:00","slug":"1975","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=1975","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>THE COMING OF THE AMERASIAN GLOBAL BOOM<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A very interesting article in <strong><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/strong>, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/10\/17\/science\/17yau.html?_r=1&#038;oref=slogin\">The Emperor of Math<\/a>&#8221; about star mathematician <strong>Dr. Shing-Tung Yau<\/strong> who teaches and researches at Harvard even as he attempts to cultivate future generations of Chinese mathematicians:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#336666;\">&#8220;For nine months of the year, Dr. Yau is a Harvard math professor, best known for inventing the mathematical structures known as Calabi-Yau spaces that underlie string theory, the supposed \u201ctheory of everything.\u201d In 1982 he won a Fields Medal, the mathematics equivalent of a Nobel Prize. Dr. Yau can be found holding court in the Yenching restaurant in Harvard Square or off the math library in his cramped office, where the blackboard is covered with equations and sketches of artfully chopped-up doughnuts.<\/p>\n<p>But the other three months he is what his friend Andrew Strominger, a Harvard physicist, called \u201cthe emperor ascendant of Chinese science,\u201d one of the most prominent of the \u201coverseas Chinese\u201d who return home every summer to work, teach, lobby, inspire and feud like warlords in an effort to advance world-class science in China. &#8220;<br \/><\/span><\/strong><br \/>Yau is the harbinger of things to come &#8211; a growing generation of Chinese and Indian immigrants and their descendants who use their world class Ameican university educations to become the catalysts of human capital &#8221; back home&#8221;, that never quite becomes &#8221; home&#8221; again.
