The excellent Insurgency Research Group<\/a><\/strong> points to\u00a0a paper <\/a>by Dr. Brynjar Lia<\/a><\/strong>, an expert on al Qaida<\/strong>, entitled “Al-Qaida’s Appeal: Understanding its Unique Selling Points<\/em><\/a>”\u00a0(PDF).<\/p>\n On the other side of the coin ( note: pun intended), blogfriend Charles Cameron<\/strong> <\/a>sent me a paper by Israeli General Ya’akov Amidror<\/strong>, “Winning Counterinsurgency War: The Israeli Experience<\/em><\/a>“(PDF).<\/p>\n Of course,\u00a0it can be said that\u00a0the Israelis have a mixed rep in the COIN community and that counterterrorism against an ideological network (Red Brigades, Baader-Meinhoff Gang, PIJ, al Qaida)\u00a0is not exactly the same thing as COIN against a broad-based, popular insurgency (Viet Cong, FMLN, Afghan Mujahedin, HAMAS, Iraqi insurgency).
