It was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/chicagoboyz.net\/archives\/5560.html\">a great discussion <\/a>from which I learned far more about\u00a0 the ideas of the iconoclastic military theorist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Boyd_(military_strategist)\"><strong>John Boyd<\/strong> <\/a>than I had ever previously considered. Not everyone involved was an admirer of John Boyd, a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"181\" src=\"http:\/\/images.barnesandnoble.com\/images\/12160000\/12165077.jpg\" height=\"275\" \/>few were initially skeptical and we had one certified critic ( though I had tried to recruit several more). Overall, it was the kind of exchange that makes the blogosphere special as a medium when it is at it&#8217;s intellectual best.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, via<strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tdaxp.com\/\">Dan of tdaxp<\/a><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tdaxp.com\/\">\u00a0<\/a>I was approached by the publisher of <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nimblebooks.com\/wordpress\/\">Nimble Books<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>W.F. Zimmerman<\/strong>, who happened to be a military history buff and who was interested in working our loose online discussion of Dr. Osinga&#8217;s prodigious tome into a book.\u00a0Initially, I was somewhat dubious but I warmed to the project at the urging of tdaxp and <strong>Lexington Green<\/strong>, and agreed to serve as the Editor and &#8220;herder of cats&#8221; in a project that would involve a large number of contributors with very different backgrounds and some fairly dense and esoteric material on strategic theory to digest and make comprehensible to a general reader.<\/p>\n<p>A wonderful experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"368\" src=\"http:\/\/kotare.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/02\/06\/reformers07.jpg\" height=\"289\" \/>We had an excellent roster of contributors for <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1934840467?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=zenpundit-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1934840467\">The John Boyd Roundtable: Debating Science, Strategy, and War<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpundit-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1934840467\" height=\"1\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: medium none\" \/><\/em><\/strong> &#8211; <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.d-n-i.net\/dni\/\">Dr. Chet Richards<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tdaxp.com\/\">Daniel Abbott<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/oz.deichman.net\/\">Shane Deichman<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fpri.org\/about\/people\/hoffman.html\">Frank Hoffman<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rethinkingsecurity.typepad.com\/\">Adam Elkus<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/chicagoboyz.net\">Lexington Green<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/hgworld.blogspot.com\/\">Thomas Wade<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.d-n-i.net\/osinga\/science_and_strategy.htm\">Dr. Frans Osinga<\/a><\/strong>, who contributed several essays.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thomaspmbarnett.com\/weblog\/\"><strong>Dr. Thomas Barnett<\/strong> <\/a>sets the intellectual tone in the foreword\u00a0after which the\u00a0authors brought a wide range of professional perspectives to bear &#8211; cognitive psychology, military history, physics, strategy, journalism and, of course, blogging &#8211; in a series of\u00a0articles that tried to explain the essence and dimensions\u00a0of John Boyd&#8217;s contribution to strategic thought.\u00a0\u00a0Hopefully, we succeeded in creating an interesting and\u00a0useful primer but the readers will\u00a0be the ultimate\u00a0judges, free to dispute our conclusions and offer contending arguments of their own.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to think that Colonel Boyd would have wanted it that way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The John Boyd Roundtable: Debating Science, Strategy, and War This post has been a long time coming.
