I was viewing documentaries the other night, though, and when <strong>Jeremy Scahill<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dirty-Wars-Jeremy-Scahill\/dp\/B00DPUB5LK\">Dirty Wars<\/a> [upper panel, below], which deals with Abdulrahman, was followed directly by <strong>Lawrence Wright<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbo.com\/documentaries\/my-trip-to-al-qaeda\">My Trip to Al-Qaeda<\/a> [lower panel, below], the age at which <strong>Ayman al-Zawahiri<\/strong> began his career as a radical stuck out like a sore thumb:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-Dirty-Wars-My-Trip-to-Al-Qaeda.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-Dirty-Wars-My-Trip-to-Al-Qaeda.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"SPEC Dirty Wars &amp; My Trip to Al-Qaeda\" width=\"590\" height=\"589\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-Dirty-Wars-My-Trip-to-Al-Qaeda.png 590w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-Dirty-Wars-My-Trip-to-Al-Qaeda-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-Dirty-Wars-My-Trip-to-Al-Qaeda-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here, then, is Wright&#8217;s commentary on the young al-Zawahiri:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ayman al-Zawahiri, the man behind Bin Laden, a doctor, product of a distinguished family, from an exclusive suburb of Cairo called Maadi, his father was a professor of pharmacology; his mother &#8212; the daughter of a diplomat\u2026 Ayman had started a cell to overthrow the Egyptian government in 1966. He was 15 years old.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How much agency do we believe fifteen and sixteen year olds have, anyway?  Do we allow them to drink a beer?<\/p>\n<p>If we are ever going to have a debate as to the moral high ground in matters of the extrajudicial killing of US citizens, it seems to me that Abdulrahman al-Awlaki rather than his father <strong>Anwar <\/strong>should be the test case we focus in on.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that young people, sometimes very young people, do on occasion play with fire. I don&#8217;t think that means we should &#8220;burn&#8221; them on suspicion, but I do think it&#8217;s part of the larger picture. And in this case, that means &#8220;drone warfare&#8221; and &#8220;targeted killings&#8221; aren&#8217;t the only relevant categories: we may need to factor the issue of &#8220;child soldiers&#8221; into our considerations as well.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Here, to give the Awlaki family&#8217;s side of the story, is an ACLU video with Abdulrahman Awlaki&#8217;s grandfather:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GQlbnulmnEw?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>And how did I wind up here?<\/p>\n<p>Well, as I said, I was watching documentaries&#8230; but the first thing that caught my eye, to be honest, was this shot from <em>Dirty Wars<\/em> [upper panel, below], which ineitably reminded me of the rosary-and-rear-view-mirror shot from <em>Manhunt <\/em>[lower panel]&#8230; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-rosaries-Dirty-Wars-Manhunt.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-rosaries-Dirty-Wars-Manhunt.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"SPEC rosaries Dirty Wars &amp; Manhunt\" width=\"608\" height=\"610\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-rosaries-Dirty-Wars-Manhunt.png 608w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-rosaries-Dirty-Wars-Manhunt-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SPEC-rosaries-Dirty-Wars-Manhunt-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>which I&#8217;d talked about in an earlier post, <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=23426\">Manhunt: religion and the director\u2019s eye<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m beginning to think no documentary about jihad and counterterrorism is complete without one&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; thoughts triggered by the Jeremy Scahill &#038; Lawrence Wright documentaries ] .
