Whether you think of them as logical forms, patterns in a pattern language, or <em>amuse-bouches<\/em> for the mind, they are here to delight and instruct \u2014 and when you pile a whole lot of them up together, they can make you just a touch dizzy. <\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;ll be bringing my collection up to date with two posts, <em>Serpent logics: a ramble<\/em>, and <em>Serpent logics: the marathon<\/em>. It&#8217;s a beginning training in what <strong>F Scott Fitzgerald<\/strong> claimed was the &#8220;test of a first-rate intelligence&#8221; &#8212; &#8220;the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>The example above comes from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SonParecidos\">Parecidos Razonables<\/a><\/em>, a blog that takes off from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Separated_at_birth\">Separated at Birth<\/a> concept and specializes in double-takes of this sort, often satirical. I&#8217;d have been flattered&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re on the subject of President Putin, here&#8217;s another category to consider&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixed games:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Putin&amp;src=hash\">#Putin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Rouhani&amp;src=hash\">#Rouhani<\/a>&#39;s op-eds show they are playing strategic chess game. Yet, we continue to play darts.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ali H. Soufan (@Ali_H_Soufan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ali_H_Soufan\/statuses\/381162699235020800\">September 20, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The op eds by Presidents Putin and Rouhani to which Soufan refers are Putin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/12\/opinion\/putin-plea-for-caution-from-russia-on-syria.html\">A Plea for Caution From Russia<\/a> and Rouhani&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/president-of-iran-hassan-rouhani-time-to-engage\/2013\/09\/19\/4d2da564-213e-11e3-966c-9c4293c47ebe_story.html\">Why Iran seeks constructive engagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ali Soufan<\/strong>, the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=4322\">Black Banners<\/a>, is always worth paying attention to &#8212; and his tweet, above, clearly belongs with that <strong>Alasdair MacIntyre<\/strong> quote I&#8217;m so fond of [<a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=9833\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=10144\">2<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not one game is being played, but several, and, if the game metaphor may be stretched further, the problem about real life is that moving one\u2019s knight to QB3 may always be replied to by a lob over the net<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s close with some examples from the arts, the first with just a touch of Tibetan Buddhist flavor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of mine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>Re: his \u201cPoppy Field\u201d paintings, Mr. Zhang said: \u201cIf they are alive, they will love these works.
