The Threat Closer to Home: Hugo Chavez and the War Against America<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Douglas E. Schoen<\/strong> and Michael Rowan<\/strong><\/p>\n

I just received a review copy of The Threat Closer to Home<\/em><\/strong> courtesy of FSB Associates<\/strong> <\/a>( hat tip to Julie H<\/strong>. ) and the two authors have done some spadework on the “Bolivarian” regime of crypto-Communist,\u00a0plebiscitary strongman, President Hugo Chavez<\/strong>. Dr. Schoen is a biographer and a\u00a0longtime political and communication\u00a0consultant to the Democratic Party as well as a\u00a0former adviser to President Bill Clinton<\/strong> and is\u00a0a member of\u00a0the Board of Trustees for the International Crisis Group<\/strong><\/a>. Mr. Rowan is a a regular columnist for El Universal<\/em> and Veneconomia of Venezuela<\/em> and is also a political consultant for the Democratic Party and an array of overseas clients ranging from politicians to economic development programs. This is Rowan’s second book on Hugo Chavez and\u00a0he is currently researching political economy issues in Latin America.<\/p>\n

I have not read the book yet but thumbing through the pages I see numerous topics of interest, including\u00a0Chavez support for FARC<\/strong>, alliance building with rogue states,\u00a0ties to Hezbollah and known terrorists on the Treasury Department’s list of figures banned from conducting business within the United States. The authors have keyed into Chavez’s autarkic strategy of state managed\u00a0commodity exports (oil) to both fund his regime and leverage foreign policy advantages – a historic\u00a0 economic policy\u00a0for aggressive, authoritarian, regimes. The book jacket carries blurbs by heavyweights in the foreign policy establishment including\u00a0Congressmen Connie Mack<\/strong>\u00a0( R- Florida) and\u00a0Ike Skelton<\/strong> (D-Missouri) as well as Richard Holbrooke<\/strong> and CFR’<\/strong>s Leslie Gelb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
