Shirer&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1451651686\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1451651686&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=zenpunditco0a-20\">The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpunditco0a-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1451651686\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0was an immensely bestselling book which nearly everyone interested in <strong>WWII<\/strong> reads at some point in time. I would put in a good word for Shirer&#8217;s lesser known <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0306805626\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0306805626&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=zenpunditco0a-20\">The Collapse of the Third Republic: An Inquiry into the Fall of France in 1940<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpunditco0a-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0306805626\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0. It was a very readable introduction to<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Third_Republic#Interpreting_the_Third_Republic\"> the deep political schisms <\/a>of <strong>France<\/strong> during the interwar and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vichy_France\">Vichy<\/a><\/strong> years which ( as I am not focused on French history) later made reading <strong>Ian Ousby&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0815410433\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0815410433&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=zenpunditco0a-20\">Occupation: The Ordeal of France 1940-1944<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpunditco0a-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0815410433\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0more profitable.<\/p>\n<p>I am a fan of the vigorous prose of British historian Michael Burleigh,<a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=3605&amp;wpmp_tp=0&amp;wpmp_switcher=desktop\"> having previously reviewed<\/a> \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004IK9FF4\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B004IK9FF4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=zenpunditco0a-20\">Blood and Rage: A Cultural History of Terrorism<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpunditco0a-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B004IK9FF4\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0here and can give <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=708\">a strong recommendation<\/a> for his <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/080909326X\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=080909326X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=zenpunditco0a-20\">The Third Reich: A New History<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=zenpunditco0a-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=080909326X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>. \u00a0Burleigh here is tackling moral choices in war and also conflict at what <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Boyd_(military_strategist)\">Colonel John Boyd<\/a><\/strong> termed <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=23215\">&#8220;the moral level of war&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in a scenario containing the greatest moral extremes in human history, the <strong>Second World War<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The more I try to read, the further behind I fall!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[by Mark Safranski, a.k.a. &#8220;zen&#8220;] \u00a0\u00a0 Cultures of War: Pearl Harbor \/ Hiroshima \/ 9-11 \/ Iraq\u00a0by John Dower\u00a0 Berlin Diary: The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent, 1934-1941\u00a0by William Shirer Moral Combat: Good and Evil in World War II\u00a0by Michael Burleigh\u00a0 Picked up a few more books for the antilibrary.
