{"id":3164,"date":"2009-07-22T04:04:53","date_gmt":"2009-07-22T04:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=3164"},"modified":"2009-07-22T04:07:34","modified_gmt":"2009-07-22T04:07:34","slug":"cantigny-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=3164","title":{"rendered":"Cantigny Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/tank.jpg\" title=\"tank.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/tank.jpg\" alt=\"tank.jpg\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spent a pleasant afternoon at <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cantigny.org\/\">Cantigny<\/a><\/strong>, the estate of legendary\u00a0<strong><em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/strong> publisher, broadcast pioneer and ardent\u00a0isolationist, \u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_R._McCormick\"><strong>Colonel Robert McCormick<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> After his death in 1955, McCormick had willed that the 500 acre grounds located in Wheaton, Illinois, \u00a0be turned into a memorial to the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1st_Infantry_Division_(United_States)\">1st Infantry Division of the US Army<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0in which he had served ( McCormick was a veteran of the <strong>Mexican Expedition<\/strong> and the <strong>Great War<\/strong>). Operated by the <strong>McCormick Foundation<\/strong>, a charitable and educational trust with an endowment that rivals that of <strong>Yale<\/strong> or <strong>Harvard<\/strong> universities, Cantigny now is home to an opulent garden, golf course, mansion museum, several restaurants, a greenhouse, a tank and artillery park, a children&#8217;s playground, visitor&#8217;s center and the Museum of the\u00a0First Division.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"185\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coverbrowser.com\/image\/time\/1267-1.jpg\" height=\"244\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The grounds contain an array of armor on display\u00a0for the tank aficianado, including\u00a0the Sheridan, Sherman and variations of the Patton series up to the M-1 Abrams, including several &#8220;experimental&#8221; models\u00a0plus a selection or artillery pieces going back well before WWI. Just added was a fully restored\u00a0D-Day landing craft (still being unloaded from the trailer).\u00a0 Aside from children&#8217;s tours and families present, I saw not a few veterans today, some very elderly and in wheelchairs, reminiscing together\u00a0quietly by particular tanks or displays.<\/p>\n<p>The museum has a collection of artifacts that run the gamut from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq War but the major sections are concerned with the two World Wars and the Vietnam War. Museum staff are friendly and helpful\u00a0but unobtrusive and the basement contains a military library and archive\u00a0that is open to the public for research.<\/p>\n<p>The grounds are very extensive and the landscaped garden, which covers many acres, \u00a0is a world class feature in itself.
