Brute: The Life of Victor Krulak, U.S. Marine<\/strong><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by Robert Coram<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Timothy Snyder<\/strong><\/p>\n

Robert Coram, <\/strong>whom\u00a0I had the pleasure of meeting at Boyd ’07<\/strong>, has a new biography of the legendary military visionary and\u00a0Marine Lt. General Victor “Brute” Krulak, <\/strong>reviewed here<\/a> by Max Boot<\/strong> and here<\/a> by Tony Perry<\/strong> (Hat tip to Dr. Chet Richards<\/a><\/strong>). Having thumbed a few pages, Krulak appears a complicated man –\u00a0gifted,\u00a0dauntless\u00a0and extremely driven but also possessed of a mean streak, edging at times toward petty cruelty.<\/p>\n

Bloodlands<\/strong> I intend to read in a “Hitler-Stalin\/Nazi-Soviet Comparison” series along with Richard Overy’s <\/strong>The Dictators: Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia<\/strong><\/a>, Robert Gellately’s <\/strong>Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe <\/strong><\/a>, Richard J. Evans’ <\/strong>The Third Reich at War<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Alan Bullock’s<\/strong> classic dual biography Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 I’d also recommend, for those\u00a0with the stomach for\u00a0historiographic commentary, Robert Conquest’s <\/strong>Reflections on a Ravaged Century<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and John Lukac’s <\/strong>The Hitler of History<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Human Face of War<\/strong><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by Jim Storr<\/strong><\/p>\n

After reading approxmately a third of The Human Face<\/strong> of War<\/strong> by\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Jim Storr<\/strong>, a retired Lt. Colonel, King’s Regiment<\/strong> and an instructor at the UK Defence Academy,<\/strong> I will say that if you are going to read only one book on modern military thought this year, it should be The Human Face of War<\/strong>. It’s that good.<\/p>\n

Aside from a\u00a0reflexive hostility toward John Boyd’s<\/strong> OODA Loop<\/strong> <\/a>( though not,\u00a0strangely enough, toward the substantive epistemology advocated by Boyd that the diagram represented), Storr’s tome is an epistle of intellectual clarity on military theory that deserves to be widely read.<\/p>\n

NDU Press<\/strong> recommends, and I concur, this review of The Human Face of War<\/strong> by Col. Colonel Clinton J. Ancker III<\/strong><\/a>.
