But others have noticed him more recently, too: <strong>Hugo Chavez<\/strong> accused him of being a conspirator with the CIA, and the Iranians thought he, <strong>George Soros<\/strong> and <strong>John McCain<\/strong> were in cahoots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/gene-sharp.jpg\" title=\"gene-sharp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/gene-sharp.jpg\" alt=\"gene-sharp.jpg\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gene Sharp<\/strong> has been in the news quite a bit recently [<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB122127204268531319.html\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/17\/world\/middleeast\/17sharp.html\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2011\/02\/16\/revolution_u\">3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/blog\/post.cfm?id=egypts-revolution-vindicates-gene-s-2011-02-11\">4<\/a>], because he pretty literally <strong>wrote the book<\/strong> on non-violent resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The young leaders of the Egyptian revolt that toppled <strong>Mubarak<\/strong> studied tactics with members of the Serbian <strong>Otpor<\/strong> youth resistance who topped <strong>Milosevic<\/strong>, Otpor studied tactics in the writings of Gene Sharp, specifically his 90-page pamphlet <strong>From Dictatorship to Democracy<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeinstein.org\/organizations\/org\/FDTD.pdf\">download as .pdf<\/a>]. Sharp wrote that handbook for use in Burma, where it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/feature\/2001\/02\/03\/dictators\/print.html\">apparently<\/a> translated at the request of <strong>Aung San Suu Kyi<\/strong> &#8212; who once <a href=\"http:\/\/aappb.org\/suukyi41.html\">cautioned her readers<\/a> that that phrase they kept hearing wasn&#8217;t &#8220;jeans shirt&#8221;, it was &#8220;Gene Sharp&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And before that, he&#8217;d penned his masterful 900-page, three-volume work, <strong><em>The Politics of Nonviolent Action<\/em><\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I told you he was impressive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended reading: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From Dictatorship to Democracy<\/strong> is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeinstein.org\/organizations98ce.html\">available<\/a> in Amharic, Arabic, Azeri, Belarusian, Burmese, Chin (Burma), Jing-paw (Burma), Karen (Burma), Mon (Burma), Chinese (Simplified Mandarin), Chinese (Traditional Mandarin), English, Farsi, French, Indonesian, Khmer (Cambodia), Kyrgyz, Pashto, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Tibetan, Tigrigna, and Vietnamese.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron ] I was impressed by him in London in the early sixties.
