{"id":3867,"date":"2011-04-02T07:11:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-02T07:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=3867"},"modified":"2011-04-02T07:20:09","modified_gmt":"2011-04-02T07:20:09","slug":"the-etiquette-of-inflight-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=3867","title":{"rendered":"The etiquette of inflight prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong> Charles Cameron<\/strong> ]<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>The other day, three <strong>Orthodox Jews<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2011\/03\/14\/national\/main20042769.shtml?tag=mncol;lst;4\">prayed aloud<\/a> with &#8220;something that appeared to the flight attendants to be strapped under their clothing&#8221; on <strong>Alaska Airlines Flight 241<\/strong> from Mexico to Los Angeles, and were greeted by the <strong>FBI<\/strong> on landing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Just for the record, this is not the first time that a Jew wearing <strong>tefillin<\/strong> and praying in Hebrew on an airliner has been suspected of being a terrorist \u2013 just the most recent.  AS CBS News reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-504083_162-6124622-504083.html\">January 21st of last year<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A religious Jew wearing a series of black boxes and leather straps called tefillin or phylacteries inadvertently set off a bomb scare on a US Airways flight to Kentucky.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And apparently it doesn&#8217;t matter too much what language you pray in, or which of the Abrahamic faiths you belong to\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/quo-inflight-prayers.gif\" title=\"quo-inflight-prayers.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/quo-inflight-prayers.gif\" alt=\"quo-inflight-prayers.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Islam<\/strong>, <strong>Judaism<\/strong>, <strong>Hebrew<\/strong>, <strong>Arabic<\/strong>\u2026 even the <strong>Christian<\/strong> <em>Lord&#8217;s Prayer<\/em> in <strong>English<\/strong> can do the trick if you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofmalta.com\/articles\/view\/20101223\/local\/passenger-recounts-scary-plane-praying-ordeal\">shout it loud enough<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Maria Busuttil, 60, said a burly Caribbean man in his early 30s put all the passengers on edge on Tuesday when just before take-off from London Heathrow he left his seat, knelt down in the aisle and started bellowing the Our Father in English. [ \u2026 ] The man, who had dark skin and dreadlocks, was holding an orange Sainsbury\u2019s plastic bag, which some passengers feared could have contained some sort of explosive. &#8220;He didn\u2019t want to take his seat.
