{"id":4018,"date":"2011-05-25T23:49:12","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T23:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=4018"},"modified":"2011-05-25T23:49:12","modified_gmt":"2011-05-25T23:49:12","slug":"2011-meet-1997-and-1995-and-1943","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=4018","title":{"rendered":"2011, meet 1997 (and 1995, and 1943&#8230;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; creativity, IARPA, HipBone Games, h\/t Hermann Hesse ]<\/p>\n<p>.<br \/>\nFunny thing, that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/quo-iarpa.gif\" title=\"quo-iarpa.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/quo-iarpa.gif\" alt=\"quo-iarpa.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1997, <strong>Derek Robinson<\/strong> wrote a short piece about my <strong>HipBone Games<\/strong>, indicating what they were good for.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/47035699\/Hipbone-Games-AI-and-the-rest-Derek-Robinson\">Read it<\/a> \u2013 then read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iarpa.gov\/solicitations_metaphor.html\">IARPA solicitation<\/a> that just came out.<\/p>\n<p>My approach is to <strong>lure people into discovering<\/strong> analogies, metaphors, parallels and oppositions by playing a game which <strong>elicits them as game moves<\/strong> &#8212; a live process, and one that cuts to the very <strong>heart of creativity<\/strong> &#8212; IARPA wants an automated version, which will be clunky by comparison.  And as Derek points out in his piece &#8212; pointed out, that is to say, fourteen years ago, quoting an even earlier (1995) comment from <strong>Douglas Hofstadter<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If, instead of using the real world, one carefully creates a simpler, artificial world in which to study the high-level processes of perception, the problems become more tractable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s what my games are &#8212; &#8220;a simpler, artificial world in which to study the high-level processes of perception&#8221; &#8212; specifically, &#8220;of analogy, metaphor, resemblance, the making and taking of meaning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been working on this stuff for at least fifteen years\u2026 inspired by a book <strong>Hermann Hesse<\/strong> published in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>And oh yes, there&#8217;s a &#8220;future of search engines&#8221; hiding  in there, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; creativity, IARPA, HipBone Games, h\/t Hermann Hesse ] .
