{"id":43897,"date":"2015-03-09T02:55:10","date_gmt":"2015-03-09T02:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=43897"},"modified":"2015-03-09T02:55:10","modified_gmt":"2015-03-09T02:55:10","slug":"sunday-surprise-addendum-magritte-and-montparnasse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=43897","title":{"rendered":"Sunday surprise addendum: Magritte and Montparnasse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; Lawrence Weschler in the same NYorker issue as Fredric Dannen ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>In the same issue of the <em>New Yorker<\/em> as <strong>Fredric Dannen<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1992\/11\/16\/revenge-of-the-green-dragons\">piece on the Green Dragons<\/a> referenced in my <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=43781\">earlier post<\/a>, as it happens, and indeed printed on the same pages, is one of <strong>Lawrence Weschler<\/strong>&#8216;s brilliant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Everything-That-Rises-Book-Convergences\/dp\/193241634X\">Convergences<\/a> &#8212; his term for what I call <strong>DoubleQuotes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve composed my own version out of the same two images, here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Magritte-Montparnasse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Magritte-Montparnasse.jpg\" alt=\"Magritte Montparnasse\" width=\"602\" height=\"420\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Magritte-Montparnasse.jpg 602w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Magritte-Montparnasse-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Routt<\/strong>, in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routt.net\/bill\/madness\/section3.htm\">The Madness of Cinema and Thinking Images<\/a>, has this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Writing under the heading &#8220;Convergences&#8221; in The New Yorker of November 16th, 1992, Lawrence Weschler explains that a train photographed dangling alongside a brick building &#8220;overshot the Gare Montparnasse, in Paris, on October 22, 1895&#8221;. What he cannot explain, and what he only points to in the way I have pointed to the coincidence between Lindsay and Deleuze, is the coincidence between this photograph and Ren\u00e9 Magritte&#8217;s well-known 1938 painting of an engine coming out of a fireplace (which is called &#8220;Time Transfixed&#8221;). The photo hallucinates the painting and the painting the photo.
