{"id":45960,"date":"2015-08-09T23:48:54","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T23:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=45960"},"modified":"2015-08-10T00:58:27","modified_gmt":"2015-08-10T00:58:27","slug":"a-difficulty-with-doublequotes-2-benzon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=45960","title":{"rendered":"A difficulty with DoubleQuotes 2: Benzon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; following on from the <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=45944\">AI dog \/ ostrich<\/a>, <em>this <\/em>]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>No sooner had I posted my piece on the <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=45944\">similarities and diffrerences between two <em>humanly <\/em>similar images<\/a> &#8212; one of them identified as a dog by a neural net, the other as an ostrich &#8212; that I came across my friend <strong>Bill Benzon<\/strong>&#8216;s piece, also posted today, <a href=\"http:\/\/new-savanna.blogspot.com\/2015\/08\/visual-resonance.html\">Visual Resonance<\/a>, in which he plays with Photoshop filters and a couple of his own images.<\/p>\n<p>Synchronicity? Zeitgeist? GMTA? <\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Here is one of Bill&#8217;s photos, which he claims &#8220;no sensible photographer would shoot&#8221;..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-1.jpg\" alt=\"Benzon 1\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-1-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Bill says: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The setting sun is low in the sky and reflecting strongly off a glass encased building, so strongly that the camera really can\u2019t deal with it. Also, I\u2019m shooting through the branches of a small tree or bush nearby and they show up as a mis-shaped dark area in the left half of the shot. I like to take such shots to see what I can pull out of them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a second version, this one tweaked with a filter..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-21.jpg\" alt=\"Benzon 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-21.jpg 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-21-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Frosted?<\/p>\n<p>I think there&#8217;s a fairly peasily perceptible family resemblance there, no?<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>But then we come to this one..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-3.jpg\" alt=\"Benzon 3\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-3-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>in which a different filter has been applied to the same image..<\/p>\n<p>To my eye. this is very different from the original &#8212; almost pure jazz in fact, and yes, Billplays jazz trumpet &#8212; though the palette &#8220;seems the same&#8221;.. <\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s this..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-4.jpg\" alt=\"Benzon 4\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Benzon-4-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>.. which seems to me discernibly similar to both the previous and the original images, and in fact consists, if I&#8217;m reading Bill right, of an overlay of the two of them.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>All this leads me to tentatively revise my formulation that &#8220;<strong>likeness and unlikeness appear to me to find themselves on a spectrum which approximates closely to identity at one end .. and absolute distinction at the other<\/strong>&#8220;, renaming my spectrum &#8220;<strong>same-same, same-diff, diff-same, diff-diff<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sameness and Difference<\/strong>, <strong>One and Two,<\/strong> <strong>Three in One<\/strong> and <strong>One in Three<\/strong> &#8212; as the writer I referenced anonymously towards the end of my previous post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christian-history.org\/council-of-nicea-3.html\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even angels and the spirits of men were matter by Greek thinking. In a sense, there are only two substances in the universe. One is God &#8212; whatever the substance is that constitutes God &#8212; and the other is matter.
