I\u00a0came away\u00a0extremely impressed\u00a0by the diverse talents and intellectual firepower\u00a0of the participants and their dedication to being positive change agents. Entrepreneurs mixed with active duty military personnel, senior leaders with juniors, Silicon Valley with Beltway,\u00a0veterans with academics, journalists and authors; despite such obvious differences of perspective, discussion commenced not just with\u00a0great civility but a sense of fraternity and esprit de corps. &#8220;Like a reunion&#8221; was how most attendees of <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> described it.<\/p>\n<p>The conference received special support from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/\"><strong>The Atlantic Council<\/strong>,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobooth.edu\/\"><strong>The University of Chicago&#8217;s Booth School of Business<\/strong><\/a> and their <a href=\"https:\/\/research.chicagobooth.edu\/polsky\/\"><strong>Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/bunkerlabs.org\/\"><strong>Bunker Labs<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Additionally, there was strong representation at <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> by the<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usni.org\/\">U.S. Naval Institute <\/a> <\/strong>in the persons of\u00a0USNI CEO\u00a0<strong>VADM (ret) Pete Daly <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.usni.org\/?s=BJ%20Armstrong\">LCDR BJ Armstrong<\/a><\/strong>, editor of the Institute&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usni.org\/store\/books\/history\/21st-century-mahan\"> 21st Century book series<\/a> (Armstrong was kind enough to slip me some copies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usni.org\/store\/books\/general-reference\/us-naval-institute-naval-strategy\"><strong>Naval Strategy<\/strong> <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usni.org\/store\/books\/general-reference\/us-naval-institute-naval-tactics\"><strong>Naval Tactics<\/strong><\/a>, edited by <strong>Thomas Cutler<\/strong> and <strong>Captain Wayne Hughes, Jr<\/strong>. respectively). <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> was held at the Booth School&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gleachercenter.com\/\"><strong>Gleacher Center<\/strong><\/a> and the itinerary can be viewed here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/defenseentrepreneurs.org\/friday-schedule-2015\"><strong>1st Day Agenda<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/defenseentrepreneurs.org\/saturday-schedule-2015\">2nd Day Agenda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/defenseentrepreneurs.org\/sunday-schedule-2015\"><strong>3rd Day Agenda<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DEF2015?src=hash\">#DEF2015 twitter feed<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The advantage of the <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> conference program\u00a0was the array of interesting speakers and workshops available (more than are listed online) running different lengths of time; the downside was that at some point, you had to miss something\u00a0cool to do something great. I invested the largest chunk of time in attending the excellent\u00a0three-part\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Design_thinking\"><strong>Design Thinking<\/strong><\/a> workshop run by <strong>Major (ret) John Silk<\/strong> as this had the most added-value relevance to my job, but I would have liked to have also\u00a0heard the Bitcoin case study, the <strong>DARPA<\/strong> talk and the DEF Consultancy by<strong> VADM Daly<\/strong> and <strong>Josh Marcuse<\/strong> of <strong>DoD<\/strong>. Fortunately, many talks were recorded and will be on the <strong>DEF<\/strong> site and<strong> YouTube<\/strong> once they are edited.<\/p>\n<p>A few highlights from <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTOH3_NWoAAO7dx.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" width=\"611\" height=\"458\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augustcole.com\/\"><strong>August Cole<\/strong> <\/a>of the <strong>Atlantic Council<\/strong> and co-author of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1MGgi67\">Ghost Fleet<\/a> <\/strong>gave the closest thing to a keynote speech with his talk <em>Ghost Fleet and the Art of Future War. <\/em>Cole delved into the utility of artists and science fiction writers in futurist theorizing about armed conflict (one such writer is <strong>ZP&#8217;s<\/strong> own managing editor, <strong>Charles Cameron <\/strong>whose contribution to Cole&#8217;s futurism project\u00a0was <a href=\"http:\/\/artoffuturewarfare.org\/2015\/04\/war-in-heaven\/\"><strong>War in Heaven<\/strong><\/a>) including &#8221; urban warfare in mega-cities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTOpeJ1W4AAPat_.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A textbook\u00a0example of the high\u00a0quality of F2F interaction at <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong>: A debate over the technical, tactical and strategic capacities of drones in non-permissive environments broke out during lunch\u00a0between <strong>VADM Pete Daly<\/strong> (gesturing)\u00a0and <strong>NDU<\/strong> researcher <strong>Joshua Steinman<\/strong> (far left) that drew in the rest of the table as well as <strong>August Cole<\/strong> and several passers-by.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTPXzgHWoAArtX-.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Richard Walsh<\/strong> of the <strong>U.S. Navy&#8217;s<\/strong> CNO Innovation cell advised everyone to &#8220;rock the boat&#8221; in a way that epitomized Boyd&#8217;s maxim of &#8220;Doing something&#8221; instead of &#8220;Being somebody&#8221;. Walsh explained his experience in terms of &#8220;grit&#8221; where people rise to an idea, a philosophy that resonated strongly with the audience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTXmc6iW4AAMcEn.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTOeO0yVEAEFOA3.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>William McNulty<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teamrubiconusa.org\/\"><strong>Team Rubicon<\/strong><\/a> gave one of the most inspiring and moving of all the <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> talks regarding American veterans who have stepped up to forge one of the world&#8217;s most effective, first responder, humanitarian NGOs. I saw McNulty speak about Team Rubicon\u00a0number of years ago at <strong>Boyd &amp; Beyond<\/strong>\u00a0and it\u00a0was stunning to hear\u00a0how the organization has since\u00a0grown in its reach and capacity to make the world a better place.<\/p>\n<p>It is important also to emphasize that great value of the informal networking times built into <strong>DEF 2015<\/strong> both during the conference and at the evening socials, respectively at <strong>25 Degrees<\/strong> and <strong>Moe&#8217;s Cantina<\/strong> (both located in the Chicago Loop). I made new friends and met old ones I have known from the strategy-sphere, Twitter and Facebook F2F for the first time.\u00a0Stimulating convos were had with <strong>BJ Armstrong, <a href=\"http:\/\/nathankfinney.com\/\">Nate Finney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jbyerly81\">Joe Byerly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@AreDangerousMen\/software-the-key-to-swarm-f230710e39a9\">Josh Steinman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mbgrinberg\">Mikhail Grinberg,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/walsh_richard\">Rich Walsh<\/a>, August Cole, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keebler013\">Nick Kesler<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kleinmi3\">Micah of West Point<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Emily of Loyola&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTIxL3GWsAErgWN.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" width=\"311\" height=\"233\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CTK-D3fWwAAcIGn.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" width=\"307\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, thanks needs to be given to the DEF leadership team for making DEF 2015 an outstanding\u00a0success, including but not limited to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/defenseentrepreneurs.org\/our-crew\/\">Ben Kohlmann, J. P. Mintz<\/a>, Mikhail Grinberg, Jen Walsh<\/strong> and <strong>Joe &#8220;the Leaderboard&#8221; Byerly<\/strong>.
