{"id":47757,"date":"2015-11-18T19:59:59","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T19:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=47757"},"modified":"2016-02-15T15:44:08","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T15:44:08","slug":"the-process-of-associative-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=47757","title":{"rendered":"The process of associative memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; it seems &#8212; to me at least &#8212; that associative memory is at the root of creativity, and that the process, preconscious pattern-recognition, is basically aesthetic in nature ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As stormy winter weather approaches please take care around our coasts. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/alwaysoncall?src=hash\">#alwaysoncall<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/rnliroughweather?src=hash\">#rnliroughweather<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNLI\">@RNLI<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Wk5W0Is2oJ\">pic.twitter.com\/Wk5W0Is2oJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RNLI Poole Lifeboats (@PooleLifeboats) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PooleLifeboats\/status\/666677538769489922\">November 17, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s the present moment &#8212; in this case, today&#8217;s tweet from the <strong>RNLI <\/strong>above. <\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s the memory it elicits &#8212; in this case, <strong>Hokusai<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Great Wave at Kanagawa<\/em>, with its three little boats, tiny Mt Fuji, and towering, breaking wave, from <strong>A Series of Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Hokusai-Wave.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" <\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the same process, from perception to memory, that I was thinking of when I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=47654\">DoubleQuoting the French Revolution<\/a>, and quoted <strong>Robert Frost<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The artist must value himself as he snatches a thing from some previous order in time and space into a new order with not so much as a ligature clinging to it of the old place where it was organic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Come to which, and moving by the same process from <strong>what&#8217;s in front of me<\/strong> to <strong>what I remember<\/strong>, here&#8217;s a <strong>DQ<\/strong> of <strong>Hokusai<\/strong> (~1760-1849) &#8212; before me now as I write this &#8212; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spincraftsoftware.com\/FractalPathsImages.html\">an image deriving from<\/a> the work of <strong>Benoit Mandelbrot<\/strong> (1924-2010) on fractals&#8221; &#8212; which looking at the Hokusai quickly reminds me of:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SPEC-DQ-Hokusai-fractal.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SPEC-DQ-Hokusai-fractal.png\" alt=\"SPEC DQ Hokusai fractal\" width=\"592\" height=\"630\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SPEC-DQ-Hokusai-fractal.png 592w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SPEC-DQ-Hokusai-fractal-282x300.png 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>And as I look at that <strong>DoubleQuote<\/strong>, here at the time of writing this post, it reminds me strongly of my earlier <strong>DoubleQuote<\/strong> of <strong>Van Gogh<\/strong> and <strong>Von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SPEC-Karman-Gogh1.png\"><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In each of these two cases, <strong>art precedes science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>In each case, too, the <strong>associative proces<\/strong>s is the same, with some item <strong>perceived in the present<\/strong> calling up a <strong>past memory<\/strong> that is related to it &#8212; in a manner that can generally be articulated and annotated.<\/p>\n<p>Such is the mechanism of a typical &#8220;move&#8221; in a <strong>DoubleQuote<\/strong> or <strong>HipBone<\/strong> game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; it seems &#8212; to me at least &#8212; that associative memory is at the root of creativity, and that the process, preconscious pattern-recognition, is basically aesthetic in nature ] .
