{"id":49467,"date":"2016-03-30T04:24:51","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T04:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=49467"},"modified":"2016-03-30T04:24:51","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T04:24:51","slug":"owls-and-roosters-wolves-and-warnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=49467","title":{"rendered":"Owls and roosters, wolves and warnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; too quiet, too loud, two versions ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rooster-and-owlm-fine-cuisine.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-49470\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rooster-and-owlm-fine-cuisine.png\" alt=\"rooster and owlm fine cuisine\" width=\"600\" height=\"535\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rooster-and-owlm-fine-cuisine.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rooster-and-owlm-fine-cuisine-300x268.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n.<br \/>\nThis isn&#8217;t the <strong>rooster and owl<\/strong> conjunction I refer to in this post, but it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roosterowl.com\/ro-pop-up\/\">popping up in the DC area<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure I first heard of the problem of the little boy who cried &#8220;Wolf&#8221; back in the mists of childhood, but it wasn&#8217;t until today, when reading up on retires CIA counterterrorist analyst and current novelist <strong>Susan Hasler<\/strong> that I first saw it applied to the issue of analysts alerting decision-makers of terrorism risks..<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DQ-hasler-landes.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-49468\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DQ-hasler-landes.png\" alt=\"DQ hasler landes\" width=\"592\" height=\"628\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DQ-hasler-landes.png 592w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DQ-hasler-landes-283x300.png 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reading Hasler&#8217;s words, I was immediately reminded of <strong>Richard Landes<\/strong>&#8216; distinction between &#8220;end times&#8221; roosters and owls, which has been a salient analytic heuristic for me since the mid-nineties, when I was invited to join Landes in Boston University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mille.org\/\"><strong>Center for Millennial Studies<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both quotes revolve around warning noises, and each features both &#8220;loud&#8221; and &#8220;soft&#8221; variants &#8212; but the differences between Hasler&#8217;s <strong>wolves and warnings<\/strong> and Landes&#8217; <strong>owls and roosters<\/strong> are subtler than the similarities between them. <\/p>\n<p>Setting them up as poles for paired contemplation energizes my thought processes &#8212; and even if I don&#8217;t arrive at any specific and immediate conclusions, let alone any actionable intelligence &#8212; it preps me with yet another <strong>pattern to watch for<\/strong> in my daily trawling of the highways and byways of the arts, sciences and OSINT on the [wild &#038; wonderful] web.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; too quiet, too loud, two versions ] . .
