{"id":51216,"date":"2016-07-10T20:07:33","date_gmt":"2016-07-10T20:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=51216"},"modified":"2016-07-10T20:14:09","modified_gmt":"2016-07-10T20:14:09","slug":"a-brief-trump-policy-statement-book-length-question-in-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=51216","title":{"rendered":"A brief Trump policy statement &#038; book-length question in response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron <\/strong>&#8212; also a tweet asking for a <strong>DoubleQuote<\/strong> &#038; getting one ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>As so often, <strong>Part I<\/strong> of this post is a somewhat playful teaser for <strong>Part II<\/strong>, which is where my real interest is to be found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part I<\/strong>, then, is about someone inquiring about two tweets <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> made, asking in effect whether anyone had <strong>DoubleQuoted<\/strong> them:. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Has anyone juxtaposed that Trump tweet about Muslim sports stars and his tribute to Muhammed Ali yet?<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Martyn (@moc_moc_a_moc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/moc_moc_a_moc\/status\/739155603352883200\">June 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like this question because it shows that <strong>DoubleQuoting<\/strong> &#8212; and indeed it&#8217;s subset, <strong>DoubleTweeting<\/strong> &#8212; is not some lonely idea of mine, but a more general form of inquiry that I&#8217;m aiming to fashion into a <strong>specigic and teachable tool for thinkin<\/strong>g.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, one <strong>Chris Taylor<\/strong> responded to Martyn&#8217;s question the next day, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FindChrisTaylor\/status\/739632412691288065\">putting the two tweets in question together<\/a>. Sadly for my purposes, he did this by screengrabbing the pair of them, thus making it impossible to click through to Trump&#8217;s two originals. I&#8217;ve therefore gone to Trump&#8217;s timeline, and present them here as they originally appeared there:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Obama said in his speech that Muslims are our sports heroes. A truly great champion and a wonderful guy. He will be missed by all!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/738950669927886848\">June 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I see this juxtaposition as having some mild merit as political argument, but mainly as a sort of nit-picky point-scoring &#8212; so I&#8217;ll leave it at that. <\/p>\n<p>For anyone who&#8217;s interested, <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/saenpremium\/donald-trump-on-islam-muslims-and-the-middle-east\">here&#8217;s a storified compilation of Donald Trump&#8217;s tweets on Islam, Muslims and the Middle East<\/a> &#8212; I haven&#8217;t verified its contents or up-to-date-ness, but ran across it in my rooting around, and thought it might be of use to some here.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part II<\/strong> is where things get interesting.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>DoubleQuote<\/strong> below, I have posted excerpts from two documents &#8212; in the upper panel, Donald Trump&#8217;s <strong>news release<\/strong> on the prevention of Muslim immigration, and in the lower panel, a couple of paragraphs from the <strong>Tablet<\/strong> magazine review of the late <strong>Shahab Ahmad<\/strong>&#8216;s extraordinary book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Islam-Importance-Being-Islamic\/dp\/0691164185\">What is Islam<\/a>, published this year by Princeton UP, and described in a blurb by Harvard Law&#8217;s <strong>Noah Feldman<\/strong> as &#8220;Not merely field changing, but the boldest and best thing I have read in any field in years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DQ-tablet-Trump-Ahmed.png\" alt=\"DQ tablet Trump Ahmed\" width=\"600\" height=\"870\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DQ-tablet-Trump-Ahmed.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DQ-tablet-Trump-Ahmed-207x300.png 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Boiled down to it&#8217;s haiku-like essence, this <strong>twofer<\/strong> goes like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><strong>Trump:<\/strong> single page, single strand statement about banning Muslims\n<li><strong>Ahmad:<\/strong> 550 page, multiple strand question as to how to define Muslims<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s inevitable that much of our popular &#8212; meaning &#8220;of the people, by the people, for the people&#8221; &#8212; discussion of Islam, brought on principally by the as yet but poorly understood connection between <strong>Al-Qaida<\/strong> and Islam, and exacerbated more recently by the equivalent link with the (so-called) <strong>Islamic<\/strong> (so-called) <strong>State<\/strong> &#8212; is framed in headlines and soundbites. <\/p>\n<p>Such single-stranded short-form messaging cannot hope to convey much at all of reality, and to get a deeper dive into what the words <strong>Islam<\/strong> and <strong>Muslim<\/strong> point to, one could hardly do better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Study-Quran-New-Translation-Commentary\/dp\/0061125865\/\">The Study Quran<\/a> for Islam&#8217;s central scripture, <strong>Jonathan Brown<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Misquoting-Muhammad-Challenge-Interpreting-Prophets\/dp\/178074420X\/\">Misquoting Muhammad<\/a> for the history and interpretation of the corpus of hadith &#8212; and Ahmad&#8217;s <strong>What is Islam<\/strong> for the amazing richness of the Islamic traditions across continents and centuries.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/9780691164182.jpg\" alt=\"9780691164182\" width=\"300\" height=\"457\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/9780691164182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/9780691164182-197x300.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Somewhere between the single words <strong>Muslim<\/strong> and <strong>Islam<\/strong> on the one hand, and the 550 pages of Ahmed&#8217;s erudition, aided and abetted by 44 pages of notes in small type and a substantial index on the other, there&#8217;s an awareness of rich complexity, perhaps sufficient for a 25-page essay or 125-page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?ie=UTF8&#038;keywords=very+short+introductions+oxford\">Oxford Very Short Introduction<\/a>, that we could all benefit from applying to our political considerations of Islam in these fraught times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; also a tweet asking for a DoubleQuote &#038; getting one ] .
