Daveed writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These spaces included both literal ungoverned territory and discursive spaces<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the overall flow of Daveed&#8217;s piece that&#8217;s a simple introductory remark, an observation of fact. From my point of view, though, there&#8217;s more to it than that &#8212; it&#8217;s a <strong>disjunction &#038; conjunctio<\/strong>n of the two realms of <strong>geography and cognition<\/strong>, matter and mind, or &#8220;outer and inner space&#8221; if you will. And that&#8217;s something always worth noting.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Daveed&#8217;s comment reminds me of <strong>Albrecht D\u00fcrer<\/strong> and his illustrations of <a href=\"http:\/\/metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/368340\">Saint Michael Fighting the Dragon<\/a>, from <strong>The Apocalypse<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DP816924.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"625\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DP816924.jpg 451w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DP816924-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here, the supernatural sits comfortably above (Latin: <em>super<\/em>) the natural.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>The physical-metaphysical (body-mind; outer-inner; objective-subjective) disjunction &#038; conjunction is recognizable in Descartes, and takes contemporary form as the so-called <strong>hard problem in consciousness<\/strong>. It&#8217;s significant that the &#8220;war in heaven&#8221; of Durer&#8217;s vision no longer fills the skies in our contemporary images of war, though <strong>heaven and hell<\/strong> are no less with us than before..<\/p>\n<p>And so I note that, <em>en passant<\/em>, Daveed has alluded to what is perhaps the great schism of our time, that between visionary and factual truths.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Raine<\/strong>, poet &#8212; and mentor of my youthful self:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fact is not the truth of myth; myth is the truth of fact.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Witness her distress as we abandon truth of myth shining &#8220;above&#8221; truth of fact, for truth of fact alone:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chemistry dissolves the goddess in the alembic,<br \/>\nVenus the white queen, the universal matrix,<br \/>\nDown to molecular hexagons and carbon-chains,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>John of Patmos, the alchemists, Durer, Blake, Jung, Raine<\/strong>, have the richer vision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; in which Gartenstein-Ross reminds me of Albrecht D\u00fcrer ] .
