{"id":5433,"date":"2012-02-18T06:12:22","date_gmt":"2012-02-18T06:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=5433"},"modified":"2012-02-18T06:13:30","modified_gmt":"2012-02-18T06:13:30","slug":"egyptian-graffitology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=5433","title":{"rendered":"Egyptian Graffitology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; politics and esthetics of revolutionary graffiti ]<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nAt first, I was looking to see whether Anonymous made an appearance in the graffiti of the Egyptian popular uprising, and yes indeed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Egypt-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Egypt-01.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"SPEC Egypt 01\" width=\"600\" height=\"619\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Egypt-01.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Egypt-01-290x300.png 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What I found in my searching around included some pretty striking graphics &#8212; and a well-wrought English pun-slogan, too!<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>In fact I stumbled onto a number of interesting visuals &#8212; many of them in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gigiibrahim\/sets\/72157628004373980\/with\/6428297179\/\"><strong>Gigi Ibrahim<\/strong>&#8216;s photostream of Egyptian street art<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One image that struck me featured &#8220;Tantawi&#8217;s underpants&#8221; &#8212; a popular motif, apparently, and one that seemed to me to make an interesting response \/ riposte to the iconic &#8220;blue bra girl&#8221; so shamelessly exposed by the Egyptian police:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-underwear.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-underwear.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"SPEC underwear\" width=\"592\" height=\"619\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-underwear.png 592w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-underwear-286x300.png 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>So you can find a modern, maybe even a post-modern Egypt, up on the walls however fleetingly.  But there&#8217;s also a sense of Egypt ancient and sophisticated &#8212; and this, too, I though worthy of your attention:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Port-Said-massacre.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Port-Said-massacre.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"SPEC Port Said massacre\" width=\"585\" height=\"619\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Port-Said-massacre.png 585w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/SPEC-Port-Said-massacre-283x300.png 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These two murals are grieving \/ protesting those who died in the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/middle-east-live\/2012\/feb\/02\/egypt-port-said-football-dsaster-live-updates\">Port Said massacre<\/a>&#8221; which followed a football game between rival Egyptian teams.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s much more to be seen &#8212; from &#8220;Facebook&#8221; and &#8220;the revolution will not be tweeted&#8221; to &#8220;no more guns&#8221; and images of a young man throwing a molotov cocktail&#8230; to graphics of cross and crescent intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>The point being that this kind of &#8220;unofficial&#8221; art, like the anasheed of jihad, can give us a glimpse into the substrate of feeling that constitutes the morale of a given movement &#8212; which can at times be raw and stark, and at times strikingly beautiful, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; politics and esthetics of revolutionary graffiti ] .
