An amazingly candid gesture from Donald Trump<\/strong>‘s back-story:<\/p>\n

In a 1997 interview with Howard Stern, he described escaping from his own wedding reception\u2014his second, when he married Marla Maples\u2014as quickly as possible to look at coverage of the wedding.<\/p>\n

The only vaguely comparable gesture I can think of for its severity is the one in which an unstable genius<\/em> by any account, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke<\/strong>, chose not to attend his own daughter Ruth<\/strong>‘s wedding because he weighed up<\/a> “the realization of my inner life” against “the work required to achieve an external life” and decided not to attend lest he miss a poem inbound during the journey or ceremony — or was it C\u00e9zanne<\/strong> he praised<\/a>, “for not losing an afternoon of painting even to attend his only daughter’s wedding”? Surely they can’t both <\/em>have missed their daughters’ respective weddings!<\/p>\n

Or can they, almost<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Here’s a poem by Richard Michelson<\/strong> from More Money than God<\/a>:<\/p>\n

C\u00e9zanne Forgets His Wife’s Funeral<\/strong><\/p>\n

The day Rilke missed his daughter’s wedding,
\nthe lesser poets, pens capped, were making love
\nin the Bavarian countryside, or feeding the chickens
\non their fathers’ farms. But Rilke is bent over, chiseling
\neach syllable, although the chiselers who run the world
\npay by the pound. Here, in the cherry orchard of his
\npatron’s ch\u00e2teau, he pauses, listens for the nightingales
\nsinging their Keatsian songs, masking the pitiful sound
\nof his grandmother’s dying. What’s your excuse?<\/em><\/p>\n

But in truth I am late again, running lights
\nand thinking of C\u00e9zanne, who is smiling
\nas he folds up his easel. Hortense, come quickly,
\nlook<\/em>, he calls out; only then, remembering.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well, that little meander through Rilke and C\u00e9zanne was a little more romantically endearing than the Trump matter..<\/p>\n
