{"id":59223,"date":"2018-05-07T13:59:18","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T13:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=59223"},"modified":"2018-05-07T13:59:18","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T13:59:18","slug":"on-negative-space-private-morality-in-the-public-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=59223","title":{"rendered":"On negative space, private morality in the public square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; not entirely keen about Judgment, me, but.. ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing on from my discussion of <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=59211\">negative space in the painting<\/a>, here&#8217;s the MSNBC clip I overheard waas on about:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n_v38KJGcUw\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>The clip, in other words, is about private morality in the public square. <\/p>\n<p>Raw Story picks up there thread in a piece titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2018\/05\/preachers-america-evangelical-leaders-slammed-hypocrisy-trump-support\/\">\u2018Where are the preachers of America?\u2019: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Evangelical leaders slammed for hypocrisy of Trump support<\/a>:Former New York Times White House correspondent Howell Raines, who rose to executive editor of newspaper, called out the evangelical community during a Friday appearance on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cThe Beat with Ari Melber.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to ask you about the negative space in the painting, the thing that\u2019s not happening \u2014 that we are always told would happen \u2014 because the Christian right and the conservative values organizations and the evangelical right cared deeply about the personal behavior of politicians and especially the president,\u201d Melber observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president now has squarely admitted to paying this woman in direct connection to the allegations of this extramarital affair,\u201d the host continued. \u201cI ask you for your view of why we\u2019re not hearing any outrage for any of those groups affiliated with Donald Trump and the Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the preachers of America when morality is legitimately at the center of our national life?\u201d Raines wondered. \u201cI think Director Comey was correct today on CBS when he said this is about values and supporting our institutions and it\u2019s imperative that Americans who believe in the normal political process and the rule of law start speaking out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s missing in the picture to me,\u201d he concluded.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a significant question, to which various answers have been given &#8212; from a quick Google search:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><strong>The Nation<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/why-evangelicals-still-support-trump\/\">Why Evangelicals\u2014Still!\u2014Support Trump<\/a>\n<li><strong>Time<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5161349\/president-trump-white-evangelical-support-slaveholders\/\">Why Evangelicals Support President Trump, Despite His Immorality<\/a>\n<li><strong>Atlantic,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/05\/a-match-made-in-heaven\/521409\/\">A Match Made in Heaven<\/a><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>but I&#8217;d like to leave &#8212; indeed emphasize &#8212; it as a question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How come the hypocrisy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And I think we should ask this, not as a question requiring a political answer, but as a moral question, hanging in the air, for the individual consciences of evangelicals to ponder..<\/p>\n<p>I have my own hyposcrisies to consider..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; not entirely keen about Judgment, me, but.. ] .
