This comes from Kim Kye Gwan so carries a lot of weight<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Anna Fifield (@annafifield) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annafifield\/status\/996581293029650432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Whiplash alert<\/strong> is a sharp, neat way to announce a sudden and powerful instance of <strong>boustrophedon<\/strong> &#8212; taking <strong>hairpin bends at racing speeds<\/strong>. <strong>Anna Fyfield<\/strong> nails it.,<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>swuitchback whiplash <\/strong>is between a <strong>Triumphalist Trump<\/strong> suggesting that North Korea is both willing and implicitly eager to come to the table to discuss the total abandonment of its entire nuclear program, and an adamant, almost adamantine <strong>N Korean regime response<\/strong> that such total abandonment is not even on the table.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In terms of goal posts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2018\/05\/north-korea-threatens-cancel-trump-summit.html\">Various Trump aides<\/a>, including Bolton and Pompeo, have repeatedly said that that what they want from the summit is \u201ccomplete verifiable irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.\u201d Of course, Pyongyang would love it if they could move the goal posts before the meeting, making the U.S. back off on this demand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>then this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/north-korea-threatens-to-cancel-summit-with-trump-over-military-drills\/2018\/05\/15\/04a15a5e-5878-11e8-8b92-45fdd7aaef3c_story.html?utm_term=.716a1ab7d466\">North Korea is rapidly moving the goal posts<\/a> for next month\u2019s summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump, saying the United States must stop insisting that the North \u201cunilaterally\u201d abandon its nuclear weapons program and stop talking about a Libya-style solution to the standoff.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/denuclearization-may-be-the-goal-of-us-north-korean-summit-but-each-side-defines-it-differently\/2018\/03\/14\/0cddbc22-27a3-11e8-874b-d517e912f125_story.html\">Denuclearization\u2019 may be the goal of U.S.-North Korean summit, but each side defines it differently<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the diplomatic buzzword can mean different things to different players on the world stage. The success of Trump\u2019s gambit probably hangs on whether he and Kim can agree on what it means for them and whether it\u2019s worthwhile to keep fudging the details of a term that U.S. and Asian diplomats have been fudging for years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Different interpretations of a word, differing perceptions &#8212; what seems at one moment to be a problem in <strong>foreign affairs<\/strong> seems on another to be a <strong>linguistic<\/strong> or even a <strong>perceptual<\/strong>&#8212; at the very least, an internal, not an external, issue. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Internal maybe, but external in it&#8217;s implications<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-northkorea-missiles-southkorea-talks\/north-korea-says-may-reconsider-summit-with-trump-suspends-talks-with-south-idUSKCN1IG2ZI\">If the U.S. is trying to drive us into a corner<\/a> to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and cannot but reconsider our proceeding to the DPRK-U.S. summit,\u201d said Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan in a statement published by the North\u2019s state-run media.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Subtlety:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>King Jung-Un<\/strong> may be under the imprression that &#8220;denuclearization of the Korean peninsula&#8221; involves, gasp, the withdrawal of the American nuclear air umbrella protecting the SOuth..<\/p>\n<p>So: a sudden 180\u00b0 change, the opposites here being presented as sequential.<\/p>\n<p>And the <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/387766-gop-governors-sign-letter-supporting-nobel-peace-prize-for-trump\">Nobel Peace Prize which Republican governors had wishes for President Trumo<\/a>, sadly  recedes..<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>From my POV, the interesting difference here between the Korean situation and that in Israel is that the former is inherently <strong>sequential<\/strong>, while the latter is <strong>synchronic<\/strong> &#8212; the furious and grief-stricken rioting in Gaza happens as official Israel, with Trumpian support, joyously celebrates the opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem; the Isreli <strong>Independence Day<\/strong> is naturally considered the <strong>Nakba or catastrophe<\/strong> by Palestinians &#8212; and hey, to add to the tensions, <strong>Ramadan <\/strong>is about to begin, with its intensification of fasting and spiritual intensity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synchrony, verbally presented:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fact that riots in Gaza and rejoicing in Israel happen simultaneously is so stark that while Israel &#8212; the effect is to undercut the apparent joyfulness of the Jerusalem celebrations with simultaneous disturbing images of the Gaza rioting.<\/p>\n<p>If <strong>Trump<\/strong>, or <strong>Jared<\/strong> perhaps, or <strong>Ivanka<\/strong>, had made any slightest acknowledgement that the Palestinians, too, had hopes of an eventual capital of their own in the existing <strong>Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem<\/strong>, the celebrations might have been more widely shared and less easiky discounted.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>If you come to your front door to conduct a press conference, it&#8217;s always wise to know what&#8217;s happening at the same time at the back door.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, oh, but I have to leave for a medical proceduerre, and there is so much more to be said..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{ by Charles Cameron &#8212;
