{"id":61683,"date":"2018-12-21T18:51:09","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T18:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=61683"},"modified":"2018-12-21T18:51:09","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T18:51:09","slug":"on-the-felicities-of-graph-based-game-board-design-thirteen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=61683","title":{"rendered":"On the felicities of graph-based game-board design: thirteen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; the Trinity and National Security, Game Boards and Mathematics, Japanese wave patterns, Maestro Harding on the interconnectedness of &#8220;all branches of human knowledge and curiosity, not just music&#8221; &#8212; plus Blues Clues at the tail end ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>Not only have the last couple of days been riotous in Washington, with more news to track than I have eyes to see, but today, still reeling under the weight of <strong>Mattis<\/strong>&#8216; resignation, <strong>McConnell<\/strong>&#8216;s statement in support and other matters, I found myself with a <em>richesse <\/em>of board-game and graph-related delights.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trinitarian NatSec:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Followers of this searies will be familiar with the Trinitarian diagram juxtaposed here with its equivalents from classical Kabballah and Oronce Fine:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img src =\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ancient-hipbone-boards-600.png\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That little triptych is from my religion and games avenues of interest, but of course I&#8217;m also interested in matters of national security, as befits Zenpundit, the strategy &#038; creativity blog. You can imagine my surprise and delight, then, in coming across a natsec version of the trinity diagram, in a tweet from <strong>Jon Askonas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my comparison:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Trinity-bd-natsec-variant.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"499\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-61686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Trinity-bd-natsec-variant.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Trinity-bd-natsec-variant-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My own attention was first drawn to the Trinitarian diagram as a result of reading <strong>Margaret Masterman<\/strong>&#8216;s brilliant cross-disciplinary work, &#8220;Theism as a Scientific Hypothesis&#8221;, which ran in four parts in a somewhat obscure and difficult to find journal, Theoria to Theory, Vol 1, 1-4, 1966-67.<\/p>\n<p>See:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20030224092104\/http:\/\/home.earthlink.net\/~hipbone\/IDTWeb\/MMIntro.html\">Margaret Masterman, George Boole and the Holy Trinity<\/a>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20021112183609\/http:\/\/home.earthlink.net\/~hipbone\/IDTWeb\/Master.html\">Margaret Masterman&#8217;s &#8220;Theism as a Scientific Hypothesis&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Game Boards and Mathematics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I could hardly fail to be intrigued by <strong>Calli Wright<\/strong>&#8216;s piece titled <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindresearch.org\/blog\/big-list-mathematical-board-games\">The Big List of Board Games that Inspire Mathematical Thinking<\/a>, eh? And look, the first game they show is a graph-based board game, <strong>Achi<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ccEAW4sqY0E\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4pEY9MUYibU\"><strong>Dara<\/strong><\/a> also looks somewhat relevant.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese wave designs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Again, those familiar with my games will know of my juxtaposition of Von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n with Van Gogh as a DoubleQuote &#8212; but let me quote from an earlier post, <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=51353\">Sunday\u2019s second surprise \u2014 the Van Gogh DoubleQuote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the <strong>Von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n \/ Van Gogh DQ<\/strong>, which I value in light of <strong>Hermann Hesse<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glass-Bead-Game-Magister-Ludi\/dp\/8087888383\">Glass Bead Game<\/a> as a clear bridge between one of the crucial dualities of recent centuries &#8212; the needless and fruitless schism between the arts and sciences, which has given rise not only the rantings of <strong>Christopher Hitchens<\/strong> and his less elegant disciple <strong>Bill Maher<\/strong>, but to such other matters as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/10\/31\/world\/after-350-years-vatican-says-galileo-was-right-it-moves.html\">Papal condemnation and &#8220;forgiveness&#8221; 359 years later of <strong>Galileo Galilei<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Charles Babbage<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/ninthbridgewatai00babb\">Ninth Bridgewater Treatise<\/a>, <strong>Andrew White<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/History-Warfare-Science-Theology-Christendom\/dp\/0879758260\">A History of the Warfare of Science With Theology in ChristendomW<\/a>, and <strong>CP Snow<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Two-Cultures-Canto-Classics\/dp\/1107606144\">The Two Cultures<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/karman-gogh.png\" alt=\"karman gogh\" width=\"600\" height=\"625\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/karman-gogh.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/karman-gogh-288x300.png 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And finally, here&#8217;s an ugraded version of the <strong>other DQ of mine<\/strong> that seeks to bridge the arts and sciences &#8212; featuring <strong>Hokusai<\/strong>&#8216;s celebrated woodblock print, <strong>The Great Wave off Kanagawa<\/strong> (upper panel, below) and <a href=\"http:\/\/minikozy92.deviantart.com\/art\/Wave-Fractal-281276494\"><strong>Jakob<\/strong> aka <strong>nikozy92<\/strong>&#8216;s fractal wave<\/a>, which I&#8217;ve flipped horizontally to make its parallel with the Hokusai clearer (lower panel) &#8212;
