{"id":62059,"date":"2019-01-18T18:13:30","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T18:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=62059"},"modified":"2019-02-01T16:50:12","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T16:50:12","slug":"pcmatic-at-war-the-peoples-militia-resistance-and-metaphors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=62059","title":{"rendered":"PCMatic: at war, the people&#8217;s militia, resistance .. and metaphors?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; an ad that blew my mind, mil metaphor piled on mil metaphor, and various ways to name theenemy, eh? &#8212; troika, wolf pack.. ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>Here we go.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M1hY0sgY-zc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was staggered to see the number of military \/ militant references inj this commercial &#8212; <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li>our country is at war,\n<li>a cyber war\n<li>the enemy, ransomeware, is rapidly growing in sophistication\n<li>the enemy is exploiting a hole in our defenses\n<li>we are pcmatic, the people&#8217;s militia to defeat the ransomware empire\n<li>patriots of the resistance\n<li>we believe we can build an army\n<li>we will defeat this enemy and win the war\n<li>join the ransomware resistance.<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the largest cluster of related metaphors I&#8217;ve seen in an ad, and I&#8217;m curious as to its rhetorical intent..<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/header-troika-of-tyrrany.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"325\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-62065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/header-troika-of-tyrrany.png 600w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/header-troika-of-tyrrany-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Tina Nguye<\/strong>n has written a fascinating piece for Vanity Fair&#8217;s Hive on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2019\/01\/troika-of-tyranny-is-now-a-wolf-pack-of-rogue-states\">the metaphors we use for The Enemy, better known perhaps as Them<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li>Axis of evil\n<li>Network of death\n<li>Troika of tyranny\n<li>Triangle of terror\n<li>Sordid cradle of Communism in the Western Hemisphere\n<li>Wolf pack of rogue states\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Cabal of Crazies\n<li>Circle of Scoundrels\n<li>League of Extraordinary Villains<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh so much more potent than calling them <strong>Hostile states<\/strong> &#8212; <strong>Wolf pack of rogue states<\/strong> is superb!<\/p>\n<p>The first set above presents ye actual efforts by various pols to provide metaphorical aid to the othering of our enemies &#8212; propaganda at its most succinct &#8212; whereas the second set consists of jokers&#8217; parodies &#038; the like &#8212; second order propaganda at the expense of the first.<\/p>\n<p>** <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be using the comments section of this post for further &#8220;collections&#8221; (metaphors of war, sports, etc, headlines, chyrons, misc items of interest), and may add some stellar examples &#8212; if they &#8220;fit&#8221; &#8212;  here in this post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; an ad that blew my mind, mil metaphor piled on mil metaphor, and various ways to name theenemy, eh? &#8212; troika, wolf pack.. ] .
