{"id":8880,"date":"2012-05-22T20:56:31","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T20:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=8880"},"modified":"2012-05-22T20:58:55","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T20:58:55","slug":"between-the-warrior-and-the-monk-i-my-father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/?p=8880","title":{"rendered":"Between the warrior and the monk (i): my father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[ by <strong>Charles Cameron<\/strong> &#8212; a warrior, a monk, and where that leaves me ]<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>Like one of those toy acrobats who flips up, over and under when you squeeze or release the two sticks he&#8217;s strung on, I&#8217;m strung between these two fellows\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OGC-and-THCR-for-ZP2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OGC-and-THCR-for-ZP2.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"OGC and THCR for ZP\" width=\"640\" height=\"371\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OGC-and-THCR-for-ZP2.png 640w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OGC-and-THCR-for-ZP2-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>and flip up, over and under on the string that stretches from war to peace. <\/p>\n<p>So here I am at Zenpundit, and I thought it might be time for me to give you a little more background about myself, where I&#8217;m coming from, and where I hope to be going\u2026<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>To get to the figure on the left of the image above, Captain <strong>Orford Gordon Cameron<\/strong> DSC, RN, my father, we have to track back a couple of generations deeper into family history, to this gentleman whose first name I bear as my own second name.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Col-AS-Cameron-VC1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Col-AS-Cameron-VC1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Col AS Cameron VC\" width=\"346\" height=\"559\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Col-AS-Cameron-VC1.jpg 346w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Col-AS-Cameron-VC1-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Col. <strong>Aylmer Spicer Cameron<\/strong>, VC, CB, my great-grandfather, earned his Victoria Cross during the Sepoy Rebellion: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For conspicuous bravery on the 30th of March, 1858, at Kotah, in having headed a small party of men, and attacked a body of armed fanatic rebels, strongly posted in a loop-holed house, with one narrow entrance. Lieutenant Cameron stormed the house, and killed three rebels in single combat. He was severely wounded, having lost half of one hand by a stroke from a tulwar.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s pride in that, passed down from his son to my father and so on down the line\u2026<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s pride, too, in the story of my own father&#8217;s DSC.  <\/p>\n<blockquote><div id=\"attachment_8908\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artworkoriginals.com\/EB5TBZVI.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8908\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/HMS-SHeffield.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"HMS SHeffield\" width=\"250\" height=\"207\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8908\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HMS Sheffield in Battle of the Barents Sea, stamp design,  oil on canvas, Brian Sanders<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>As gunnery officer of HMS <em>Sheffield <\/em>in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.german-navy.de\/kriegsmarine\/articles\/feature5.html\">Battle of the Barents Sea<\/a>, Lt. Cdr. Cameron&#8217;s guns and those of <em>Jamaica <\/em>crippled the German heavy cruiser <em>Hipper<\/em>.  When the news arrived in Germany, Hitler &#8220;with veins standing out on his neck&#8221; excoriated Admiral Raeder:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This operation only confirmed what he had instinctively felt all along &#8212; that the surface fleet was completely useless and that it was poorly staffed and ineptly commanded. The three battleships Tirpitz ,Schleswig-Holstein and Schlesien , the two pocket battleships Admiral Scheer and L\u00fctzow , the battle-cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau , the heavy cruisers Hipper and Prinz Eugen , and the light cruisers Emden , K\u00f6ln , Leipzig , and N\u00fcrnberg would all be decommissioned and summarily scrapped. To the extent possible their guns would be converted to land use. Henceforth, the largest navy ship would be a destroyer and all emphasis would be on the u-boat fleet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Churchill wrote: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This brilliant action fought by the Royal Navy to protect an Allied convoy to Russia at the end of the year (1942) led directly to a crisis in the enemy\u2019s naval policy and ended the dream of another German High Seas Fleet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>I have been thinking about my father quite a bit recently, since his medals arrived from England about ten days ago:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Orford-Gordon-Cameron-medals.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Orford-Gordon-Cameron-medals.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Orford Gordon Cameron medals\" width=\"642\" height=\"448\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Orford-Gordon-Cameron-medals.png 642w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Orford-Gordon-Cameron-medals-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>His DSC, left, was awarded for gallantry in the Barents Sea engagement, for which Cpt. <strong>Sherbrooke<\/strong>, on <em>Onslow<\/em>, was awarded the Victoria Cross, and Rear-Admiral <strong>Burnett<\/strong>, on <em>Sheffield<\/em>, the DSO.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s pride there, too.<\/p>\n<p>Gallantry: <em>what a word<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>And the military strain in the family runs deep\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wedding1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wedding1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"wedding\" width=\"642\" height=\"394\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wedding1.jpg 642w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wedding1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This photo of my parents&#8217; wedding shows, from left to right in uniform, my grandfather Col. Sir <strong>Henry Clayton Darlington<\/strong> KCB, CMG, TD<\/a>; <strong>John Wise<\/strong>; my great uncle Gen. Sir <strong>Clement Armitage<\/strong> KCB, CMG, DSO; <strong>Jan Newnham<\/strong> (best man); my father, Lt. Cdr. OG Cameron; my grandfather Brig. <strong>Orford Somerville Cameron<\/strong>, DSO, RA; my uncle <strong>Glenton Roslyn Williams<\/strong>; my uncle Colonel <strong>Henry John Darlington<\/strong>, OBE, DL; and Rev. <strong>Aylmer Peter Cameron<\/strong>, also my uncle.<\/p>\n<p>Quite the gang &#8212; and not a civilian among them, although admittedly the photo was taken in 1942.<\/p>\n<p>My varied aunts &#8212; brilliant, eccentric, elegant, delightful, take my word for it &#8212; are there too.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s my father, and the pole that pulls me towards gallantry and the martial side of things.
