a stroll in the park with some of the Kingdom&#8217;s finest horticulturalists displaying their best, and not usually the place you&#8217;d go to be reminded of war, though the show itself does take place in the grounds of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Hospital_Chelsea\">Royal Hospital, Chelsea<\/a><\/strong>, the home of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chelsea_pensioner\">Chelsea Pensioners<\/a><\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Pensioner2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Pensioner2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Hwang Jihae\" width=\"642\" height=\"363\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Pensioner2.jpg 642w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Pensioner2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>It is only appropriate, then, to find this picture of <a href=\"http:\/\/mengnews.joinsmsn.com\/view.aspx?gCat=020&#038;aId=2953327\"><strong>Skippy<\/strong>, a Pensioner from the Korean War, with Korean designer <strong>Hwang Ji-hae<\/strong><\/a>, whose garden this year won a gold medal for its representation of the DMZ between North and South Korea&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/flowers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/flowers.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"flowers\" width=\"641\" height=\"368\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/flowers.png 641w, https:\/\/zenpundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/flowers-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>and the wildflowers that have been taking over the DMZ, reasserting nature&#8217;s primacy where men&#8217;s wars were fought. <\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Hwang Ji-hae <a href=\"http:\/\/mengnews.joinsmsn.com\/view.aspx?gCat=020&#038;aId=2953327\">named her garden <strong>Quiet Time: DMZ Forbidden Garden<\/strong><\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This year\u2019s \u201cDMZ Forbidden\u201d garden is \u201cgoing to be a symbolic place honoring everyone who suffered because of the war,\u201d Hwang said in an interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily in December in her studio in Gwangju. <\/p>\n<p>The garden is a recreation of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, which has been kept nearly untouched for six decades since the 1953 Armistice Agreement. The zone has become a diverse habitat for various kinds of rare plants and animals. <\/p>\n<p>To Hwang, the DMZ has become the \u201cmost beautiful garden on the planet,\u201d though it symbolizes the legacies of the war and the tragic division of the Korean Peninsula at the same time, the artist said in the interview. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DMZ was formed organically after a major upheaval. It was created because of the war but is now a symbol of peace.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to a press release issued by Hwang\u2019s agency on Tuesday night after winning the prize, 60 percent of the plants in the \u201cDMZ Forbidden\u201d garden are from Korea and some of them are indigenous to the DMZ area. <\/p>\n<p>Hwang said that some of the British veterans of the Korean War she met last year talked about plants they saw in Korea, and they asked her to find them. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are six plants that are indigenous to the area near the DMZ, including Geumgang chorong [a type of bellflower], and they will all be part of the garden I\u2019m creating,\u201d she said during the interview in December. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my way of thanking the veterans.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ by Charles Cameron &#8212; Memorial Day, USA ] . 2.
