Bernard Cornwell has a very vivid description of flogging as inflicted in the British army circa 1800 or so in Sharpe’s Tiger. I can’t vouch for the exact historical accuracy but it seemed reliable. It wasn’t something to be forgotten if ever seen.
.
It was a very enjoyable book though as are all of Cornwell’s.
