Holy Fire, California and Jerusalem

In its own way, the Holy Fire in Jim’s canyon has as much place in the spectrum of sacredness as the Holy Fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre does, sliding in, so to speak, by the back door..

Ibrahim Pasha, the Ottoman warlord, had been in Jerusalem trying to impose new taxes and military conscription. This caused much consternation among the locals. The anxiety spilled over into the Holy Sepulchre celebrations, and the congregation erupted into a mass panic when the fire was lit, trapping the Khedive in the crush. He only survived when his bodyguards hacked their way out of the church. The Holy Fire stampede then sparked a general revolt all throughout Palestine.
