Love the reference to jacquard looms! And, I recall doing macrame — patterns of braiding. I also have a favorite pattern of string figures. Remember childhood with the basic cat’s cradle? Well, there is a series of patterned knots in that loop of string that looks like it is getting more and more tangled into a hopeless mess as you go through the repetitions until the moment of revelation with the final knot, upon which opening the hands wide: Voila! the pattern out to a ladder! It is, fittingly, called “Jacob’s Ladder.” Fun! the moment of reveal always garners oohs and aahs.

Hers is a lot neater looking than mine ever was! Thanks for finding it, Charles. Fun to see it again.
