Slightly different, but related. Christian churches were often built on pagan worship sites. This is frequently the case for churches dedicated to St. Michael in the British Isles.

That’s as much an appropriation as a destruction. Traditions were meshed by Christian appropriation in the American Southwest as well. Probably sites were appropriated too, but that’s a little harder to know.
