Fifty Dead Men Walking

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Just watched this. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Some of the character relationships were too rushed or shallow. Ben Kingsley, always a compelling performer, should never wear a toupee. That said, a fantastic COIN, counterintelligence, police drama kind of film. The fictionalized story of IRA infiltrator Martin McGartland eminded me a little of a Gaelic version of Donnie Brasco.

Oliver Stone is to History what Roman Polanski is to Children.

Official Avatar Movie

The Hunt for Gollum

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Hard to believe that this was an amateur production. For film making, this is akin to what the first great blogs were to publishing, a tipping point moment toward mass amateurization:

THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM – FULL Trailer 1 from Independent Online Cinema on Vimeo.

I watched the full 40 minute film a few days ago on my computer at The Hunt for Gollum website, it was impressive. Incidentally, the creators had permission from the Tolkien Estate to proceed as a non-profit venture and gave J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision, mostly culled from extant writings, notes and appendixes, a respectful treatment.

Hat tip to Scholars & Rogues.

Slumdog Millionaire

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Watched this tonight and – against my preconceptions – found it to be an excellent film. I can understand why it’s phenomenal success may have caused mixed feelings in India but that underscores the universality of the film’s appeal. Some plot contrivance but impressed nonetheless.
