4GW FINALLY HITS THE MSM

The Chicago Tribune today has a major feature on Iraq, the Pentagon and advocates of 4GW and counterinsurgency warfare. In the lengthy article, the Trib mentions or quotes Thomas X. Hammes, H.R. McMaster, William Lind, Greg Wilcox and H. John Poole.

The Trib is not always a first rate national newspaper because it relies too heavily upon newswire services when they should be hiring more foreign correspondents but the Editors deserve kudos for the resources and print space they have given to their GWOT related subjects like their Islam series and the U.S. military. It’s a serious attempt to inform their readers on topics most of the MSM ignores in favor of fluff and scandal.

    Lind’s comment is striking

“There’s nothing that you can do in Iraq today that will work,” said Lind, one of the original Fourth Generation Warfare authors. “That situation is irretrievably lost.”

Is that an honest summary of his views?

From my limited reading of Lind’s commentary on current events I’d say that pessemistic statement reflects his views well.

I do not agree however and would suggest that Lind’s complete disdain for both the top brass and the Bush administration might be coloring his analysis. Things are better in Iraq from an American standpoint than a year ago though not nearly as good as Cheney claimed.

The insurgency is trying hard to stimulate sectarian warfare/civil war because they fear the Sunnis will waver or are wavering on making political deals with the Iraqi government. That isn’t a move from a position of strength.

The Patriot Act is a prime example of Fourth Generation Warfare designed to undermine the resiliant fabric of American society. Who is behind such blatant destruction of American freedoms? Bin Laden?
