BOOK RECOMMENDATION

The Third Reich in Power by Richard J. Evans.

A masterpiece by a historian at the top of his game.

Evans is first-rate. I particularly enjoyed his “Lying About Hitler,” which thoroughly discredited whatever claim David Irving had to being a serious historian. These days, I pay a lot more attention to footnotes than I used to.

    hi ralph,

Ilove footnotes too (occupational hazard I suppose), vastly prefer them to endnotes; some of the most entertaining footnotes are in Solzhenitsyn’s _Gulag Archipelago_, often becoming entire anecdotes in themselves. John Lukacs is another historian who is not afraid of using meaty footnotes.

Getting back to Evans, I emjoyed his _In Defense of History_ as well.
