    The social construction of that map, and what it’s meant to represent (Russia’s lost southern colonies?  etc?) would be an interesting discussion!

    I’d like to see an ethnographic map superimposed upon this mercator projection. These borders are totally artificial as opposed to say, real ones that would flow along places like the Fergana valley – the Tsars did not even completely subjugate some of this territory until the early mid-19th century and the Soviets did not reimpose control over Kazakhstan until the Basmachi revolt was crushed, early 30’s maybe
