Campaign Reboot: On Boyd & Beyond 2012

Monday, October 15th, 2012

At the Boyd & Beyond 2012 Conference, one of the people I had the pleasure of meeting was British political consultant Chris Cox, who blogs at Campaign Reboot. Chris not only a presenter at the conference, he was first out with a review of the proceedings too.

Boyd and Beyond – Initial thoughts

In terms of the event itself, I need to put it in the context that I found it. I know about 3 people who I can mention John Boyd to and have them know who I mean, so coming to the conference was special in and of itself. It was also gratifying to meet some other Brits there, JB and Michael Moore, who both spoke on their specific areas of expertise. Having so many people there who have immersed themselves in the concepts was hugely exciting.
The calibre of all the speakers was extremely high and the range of topics as diverse as could be expected. It was particularly good to have so many Marine speakers in attendance, since for a civilian it’s sometimes hard to conceive of how Boyd’s ideas get used in the military context. I don’t want to call out particular speakers as being better than others. Some were more resonant to me but all had a perspective which was interesting and valuable.
Getting to visit the Boyd archives was also a very special experience, and Mary Ellen Boyd was kind enough to take the time to talk to some of us about her father on a more personal level. I now have a copy of a hand drawn version of the OODA loop which we found in a draft of one of Boyd’s presentations. I also received audio copies of various of Boyd’s briefings which I can’t wait to listen to when I’m back in the UK.
Overall I felt the strength of the event wasn’t in the questions that it answered, but in the questions that it raised. It’s easy to become navel gazing when you’re coming up with ideas in isolation, and I don’t think anyone who spoke got away without someone asking a sharp question or two which challenged what they were saying. I know from my own experience that I need to go back to the drawing board.
Although the focus of the conference is on Boyd there was healthy discussion of ideas which are only loosely connected to Boyd, or are implementations of his ideas which could not be predicted. It’s a chaotic field, which I imagine is how Boyd would have wanted it to be, with people spinning off his ideas to unexpected places.

A modified note from Stan Coerr:

To All-

We are looking forward to seeing everyone a month from now, on the morning of 12 October 2012 in Quantico.

IF YOU ARE A SPEAKER:  I need a positive response from you that your time allotted, subject and day are correct.  If you need us to move you, let me know.

Coordinating instructions:

1.  Dress code Casual.

Officers:  you do not need to wear a uniform.  There will be people there in blue jeans.

2.  Location

We are going to be in two different places on the two days we are there.

On Friday, the first day, we will meet at 7:30 am in the Command and Staff College building, right next to the Gray Research Center. You should have no trouble at the gate.

To stay overnight:  Crossroads Inn is a hotel on the base, less than a mile from the venues.  It is at 3018 Russell Rd, Quantico, VA 22134 Phone  (703)630-4444

On Saturday, we will meet at 8:00 am at the Expeditionary Warfare School, also on the base in Quantico.  We will give those directions on Friday.

3.  Food

We are looking for volunteers for food and drink.  Coffee, water and snacks are most welcome. Please contact me and Scott Shipman if you are able to help. [Note: Scott Shipman is bringing coffee. Someone volunteered for water and bagels, but I misplaced the note—drop me a comment/email to close the loop.]

4.  Tempo

We are cramming in a lot of information and a lot of presentations…and a lot of people. I know that the math does not add up on our schedule; people can contract or expand as needed. It is my intent that we will eat right there in the room, both days, and take breaks right there as well.

5.  Next

It is my intent that we will start doing this twice a year. I am planning to start a Boyd and Beyond 2013 conference in Silicon Valley / Monterey / Palo Alto area next spring, IN ADDITION TO our usual October event in Quantico.  I am convinced that people there will be intrigued by our group and will want to participate. I have started talking to people about how, and where, to do this.  If you have ideas, bring them and we will discuss.

Scott and I look forward to seeing everyone in a month!

Yours,

Stan Coerr

Boyd & Beyond 2012

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Colonel John Boyd

This is a head’s up early warning so people can get their schedules and plans together.

From J. Scott Shipman at the Disciples of Boyd’s Strategy Group:

Greetings! A gentle reminder that Boyd & Beyond 2012 is scheduled for 12 & 13 October 2012 at Quantico, VA.

I would encourage those interested in presenting to contact me or Colonel Stan Coerr. As far as I know, Stan doesn’t have a presenters list. As in the last couple of years, we discourage the use of PowerPoint. The last two years have been two compelling days, and I’ve no doubt this year will be no exception.

There is no charge to attend, as the Command & Staff College makes space available. So check you schedules and make plans to attend, and consider submitting an idea for a presentation.
