    This is kinda creepy…. And sad. And at the same time it would appear to be working.

    Say, Mark, by any chance, might you recall a story from the early 1990s about a “special” school that was suppose to prepare future agents for the Russian version of the IRS?
    IIRC, it was for kids. When I first heard about it, I’d swear that this thing seemed to be some sort of “agoge.” (Before I learned of this, I had no idea how important martial arts training were for tax collection!)
    Wondering now how are the “returns” on that “investment”….

    Hi Jayson,

    Nothing on a Russian “IRS” but traditionally, during Soviet times all “special” units from the KGB to the GRU to Spetsnaz, Osnaz etc. underwent extensive, ongoing, martial arts combat training. Putin himself is an example of that.

    So I think your anecdote is highly probable.

    I’ve met an ex-KGB martial arts instructor – had tea with him and his wife in their apartment. Superficially, very charming but a nasty piece of work as a human being.
