Breaking New Political Ground
The following is not to be taken as a endorsement of Herman Cain, but the ending to his generally bland and amateurish political commercial is nothing short of astounding in 2011:
Sequel Idea: Cain and Arnold fire up two giant Cubans and then just laugh maniacally into the camera; if he does that, I am sending the dude a check.

This may be the nuttiest political ad I’ve seen this year—and I admire Cain.

Crazy stuff. The cigarette is amazing in 2011. But, what does it mean? Who does it appeal to? Is the whole Cain campaign performance art? Or a giant open-air promotion for his book? Anyway, I like Cain better than any of the others, with various caveats and reservations. (There is a Marx Brothers movie where they try to get into a restaurant. They are told, you have to have reservations. Groucho says, we do have reservations but we’ll eat here anyway. Sorta how I feel about Cain.)

I have to think there’s some kind of targeted focus group research, geared to GOP primaries and independent voters, on the cigarette. Because the only other explanation is that Cain intends to join the board of RJ Reynolds

Not sure you’re aware, but it seems like your RSS feed has been down for a couple of days.

Andy, thank you – I found the problem – trying to fix …..

FIXED! Thanks again, Andy.

My Dear Watson: You have to learn to read the subtext. I.e., the "anti-P.C." message.
.
What is truly amazing is that the Libertarian crowd, or at least some of them, have been so brainwashed by P.C.ness over the years, they can find this message objectionable or confusing also. We’re in Maverick territory here, so get used to it!! Heh.
.
On a lighter note, didn’t I hear on MSNBC (bastion of fair and balanced, I know…) that the man in this ad is Cain’s campaign manager, who has previously run into some voter-fixing shenanigans in the past….Ah well, perhaps I heard wrong or perhaps I was just listening to MSNBC…..

CGW: The cigarette does come as a shock. I showed it my kids and they were appalled. The anti-cigarette indoctrination they get these days is relentless. A person shamelessly smoking is, to them, what a public act of sodomy would have been like in Downtown London during the reign of Victoria. They know it exists but they are appalled that anyone would allow himself to be seen doing it. However, my interest is more strictly: "will it work?" I hope so. I like it. But I suspect I am very far from the median voter.

Never smoked a cigarette in my life, although i do enjoy a good Churchill San Latano from time to time. The add in my mind represents "freedom" and hits the PC world like a fast ball down the middle when they expect the breaking ball. I like it! I say this straight from the gut and i personally trust none of the current politicians on either side of the table. Since Reagan left office we have been in decline with integrity based politics. I take no pleasure in saying so.

Someone told me years ago that a successful ad is one your remeber, even if it is bad. Not sure if this is valid or not, but I can still remeber an ad over thirty-years ago that was terrible because of the gravelly voice that said over and again: "Buy your car at Brown’s Pontiac." Maybe this ad fits in that category?

Wow…I didn’t even notice the cigarette. BFD.
.
But then again I’m in probably the least PC of work settings known to man.
.
I thought the bigger deal is the cheeeeezy muzak that was playing toward the end.
October 27th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
That cheeeeezy muzak is some kind of TEA party anthem, according to comments left on my blog, hence some kind of secret wink from Herman.
