The Nation of Islam and Scientology
[ by Charles Cameron — at the confluence of two relatively new religious movements ]

I’ve known for a while that Minister Louis Farrakhan had expressed a positive view of L Ron Hubbard’s Scientology, but this short clip from a Nation of Islam leadership talk took me by surprise:
.
.
I am not a member of either faith, let alone both — but as a student of religions I find possible confluences between them — such as this one promises to be — fascinating.

The birth of Scientology happened in the mid 1950’s when rocket scientist, JPL co-founder, and occulist Jack Parsons and then sf writer L Ron Hubbard did a series of complicated months-long magickal rituals. This is magick with a “k” ala Aleister Crowley.
Hubbard soon walked off with Parsons wife and money, Parsons blew himself up in a rocket fuel accident, and Hubbard started Scientology.
People knowledgeable about Crowley say Scientology is magick, but performed without the knowledge or permission of the person.

Hi Bob:
.
What I’ve seen of the history of the Crowley Parsons Hubbard Erhard continuum is fascinating, though I don’t know if there’s a trustworthy account to be had in any one place. Wasn’t the “working” in question a version of the rite Crowley described in his novel, Moonchild?
